Forest of Crocodiles
How do white South-Africans deal with their fears of crime, violence and black people? Like the crocodiles that carpet the country’s riverbanks, some survive without evolving, living with their fears. Others make fear their friend and evolve in ways that you would never imagine. Many white South-Africans live a fearful life behind gates and fences. As this film shows, it is sometimes hard to distinguish between real and imaginary fear. Fear is a part of the culture and the mythology of South-Africa.
Social Interest
A big issue in South Africa is the criminality; South Africa is especially known for its farm attacks. Because of the high criminality rates, a lot of white South-Africans feel unsafe. As a result, these scared residents have been participating in neighbourhood watches, hiring private security companies and building gated communities. The fear of white South-Africans for their black fellow citizens has yet again formed a dichotomy in post-apartheid South Africa.
