Love and Sex in China by Anne Loussouarn

WATCH FOR FREE In the documentary Love and Sex in China we get a glimpse of the culture surrounding partnership and marriage in China. In contrast to the past people tend to find a partner at a later age because of the prosperity bringing education and careers. As a result of this the aging singles have to resort to lessons in the art of sedution, marriage markets and speed dating to get married before the age of 30, when people are considered as obsolete. The documentary continues to show a cultural tradition for the rich and powerful that has reappeared since China’s newfound economic prosperity: the concubine. The women are mistresses who provide their love and services in exchange for luxuries.

Social Interest

China has over 180 million single people. This is partly the result of economic prosperity and the booming education opportunities but also because One Child Policy . The latter has caused the ratio of males and females in China to grow out of balance, because of the preference of parents to have a boy instead of a girl. In the 21st century this has led to a whole new market surrounding love and marriage. Money is one of the most important things in finding a partner. Obviously most for the concubines, who should be available for their benefactor 24/7 in exchange for their luxury lives. The presence of concubines causes many marriages to collapse and leaves many wives heartbroken. Catching a cheating husband in the acts is the object for many of these women. Private detectives search for evidence of the affair to provide in court. This can even results in face to face confrontations between wife and concubine.
