Day by day – Femi Kuti
In the Plus XXX studio in Paris, producers and musicians are frantically working day and night to finish the next Afrobeat project; the sixth album of Femi Kuti, Nigerian musician and son of the African legend Fela Kuti. As the camera rolls, the project is proving to be a difficult challenge. The album Day by Day was released in September 2008 after two years of hard work. The record was nominated for the 2010 Grammy Awards.
About Femi Kuti
Femi Kuti is a Nigerian musician. He started off his musical career by joining the band of his father, the famous Fela Kuti, who died in 1997. Like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career, fighting cultural imperialism, corruption and political injustice. Femi has been working on solo projects since the late 80s.
Musical Relevance
The genre Afrobeat is a combination of jazz, Nigerian Yoruba music, chants, funk and West-African Highlife. The music gained a lot of popularity in Africa in the 70s. Bandleader Fela Kuti (1938-1997) was one of the most important musical figures of this genre. Nowadays, afrobeat is still a popular genre, with afrobeat bands and musicians performing worldwide.
