Born to be blind
n Born to be Blind, director Roberto Berliner follows the lives of Maria, Regina and Conceicao; three sisters from Brazil who have been blind since birth. This handicap (‘the will of God’) does not prevent the sisters from staying positive and singing on the streets of Campina Grande to get their money and food. The first recordings of the documentary make women turn into local celebrities. They give performances, interviews for TV and radio and are also followed by Berliner during these developments. Born to be blind is therefore not only a documentary, but also an opportunity for the blind sisters to escape a shabby life.
About the director
The Brazilian Roberto Berliner has had a versatile career behind it. He directed music videos, advertisements and documentaries for television and is one of the founders of the nonprofit TV Zero. He has been awarded several times for his work. Born to be Blind (A pessoa é Para o que nasce) is the first documentary of Berliner for the big screen. He met the sisters Maria, Regina and Conceicao as early as 1997 when he was filming for a television series. He was so impressed with the singing sisters that he decided to dedicate a documentary to them.
